Romelu Lukaku nets a brace as Everton claimed victory over Southampton at St Mary’s for the first time since 2002.
The Belgian scored on 22 minutes before adding a second on the stroke of halftime while Ross Barkley’s curling effort six minutes from time made it 3-0.
Southampton conceded more than two goals for just the second time in 27 Premier League outings in the loss while Everton has scored at least two in their opening two matches of 2014/15.
Arouna Kone attempted an effort on goal after six minutes only for it to be blocked.
Southampton then had two chances on target with Matt Targett and Sadio Mane attempts requiring saves from Tim Howard four minutes apart.
Everton would break through on the counter-attack following a corner 14 seconds later through Lukaku who headed in Kone’s cross to the back post.
Barkley nearly doubled the lead on 29 minutes only to be denied by Maarten Stekelenburg while Tom Cleverly thrashed the rebound behind.
Lukaku added a second in an impressive first half by the player when his 45th minute left-footed strike beat the goalkeeper.
Everton were pressed to start the second half with Southampton controlling possession but the hosts were unable to find a breakthrough.
Graziano Pelle’s vicious volley required a save by the Everton shot stopper eight minutes after the restart.
Southampton manager Ronald Koeman introduced forward Jay Rodriguez in the 72nd minute who made his first appearance at home since returning from injury.
Mane then tested his range only for the effort to be turned behind for a corner.
Everton added a third in the 84th minute after Seamus Coleman’s one-two with Lukaku found Barkley in the box whose curling shot beat the keeper.
