CONCACAF WC Qualifying: Bermuda 0-1 Guatemala

Guatemala advanced to the third round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying after defeating Bermuda 1-0 at the National Sports Centre in Bermuda.

Stefano Cincotta’s recorded his first international goal on 26 minutes – the lone tally in the second round tie after a scoreless draw in Guatemala on Friday.

Goalkeeper Ricardo Jerez denied two second half chances by Bermuda who would have needed two goals to progress.

The third round draw will be held on 25 July, at the Konstantinovsky Palace in Saint Petersburg with matches being played from 31 August to 8 September.

Guatemala nearly went ahead on three minutes after a Bermudan defender was caught in possession but he shuffled the ball back far enough for goalkeeper Dale Eve to clear.

Eve was then forced into two saves five minutes apart as Carlos Ruiz struck from close range in the 11th minute before Marco Pappa attempted a shot from the right.

Reginald Lambe squandered Bermuda’s first opportunity to test the Guatemalan goal on 17 minutes when his first touch inside the box was too heavy.

Cincotta would push Los Chapines ahead on a low shot to the far corner nine minutes later.

Marco Pappa almost doubled the lead 10 minutes from halftime from a direct corner kick but Eve did enough to keep the ball out.

Shortly after the restart, Ruíz struck a volley goalward that bounced in front of the keeper requiring an acrobatic save.

Second half substitute Tyrell Burgess could not bring Bermuda back into the tie following a 57th minute corner kick that fell loose at the feet of the Guatemalan keeper.
